RIVERS

We are the mothers of all nations,
the lifeblood of the earth,
for within our primal waters
all of life was given birth.
We were the cradles of creation,
the essence of all that lives,
but man seems not to understand this,
scant honour to us he gives.

We have been dammed and drained,
and diverted from our courses,
viewed by stupid man as just
another of his resources.
Although many of us are dying
and some of us are dead,
he cares not a jot for us,
no matter what he has said.

Though man needs us to survive
to provide his essential need
still he speeds his own demise
through his pollution and his greed,
but when he has crippled the last of us
and he is dead and gone,
the rains will cleanse our waters
and we will carry on -

Never pausing to remember him,
never caring he is gone!

And the sentiments are all too true. Without clean water we are doomed, yet we continue to pollute and poison that which gives us life.
