Yeppoon Backyard Cricket

Post by Bob Pacey » Sun Jan 24, 2016 5:28 pm

Last weekend I performed at the break up for the Yeppoon Backyard Cricket Series and was asked to write a poem to cover the series.

They manages to raise over $6000.00 for the McGrath Foundation ( a charity dear to my heart ) and Redkite good onya fellas. The nicknames are mandatory.

Yeppoon Backyard Cricket Series
Major Sponsors
Fourex and The Strand Hotel
Sponsors
Seaside Embroidery, Yore Outdoors, CEADS, Roth Plumbing, Keily’s, Elders, Allwayz Concreting, Ramke’s Auto Electrical, GoodeAir, I. E. Developments.

The battle lines were drawn and the rules were set in stone
There would be no quarter given as they battled for the throne.
A bunch of Aussie fella’s all keen to make their mark.
To crush the opposition and smash them off the park.

Short on cricket expertise but big on GUTS ! and pride
They wore their hearts upon their sleeves to be the better side.
A test match you may ask ? Is this the Aussie cricket team
Oh no it’s more important and the founding of a dream.

A six match series in Yeppoon by two sides of no fame
To raise a quid for charity that was their only aim.
McGrath foundation and Redkite their coffers they would swell
The rules were backyard cricket and that was probably just as well.

Game one was out at Davo’s place a pitch of some renown
and Tubsy taught them all a lesson as the rain came tumbling down
Chief sledger Grunter gave em heaps and though Jimmy tried his best
The Vinegar we fed them put the Worlds best to the test.

With a win now underneath their belts the Aussies start to roll
And Game two out at Walmsleys place took a torrid toll.
Duckey led the Aussie charge with a stand of Thirty - Five
The World were on the rack and then Shorty came alive.

He set name calling records up to the highest mark
Players hung their heads in shame as he sledged them off the park.
Even Channel nine turned up to see the Aussies stunning win
The World limped away in horror as their hopes fell in the bin.

Game Three way out at Crannys farm was a bit out of the norm
A Day-Nighter with the trimmings, the calm before the storm.
The world were up against it, the series going down the drain
Then Yorey smacked a fifty and the team went off their brain

Jimmy had a blinder with the bat and in the field
And when Yorey hit the Redkite they showed they’d never yield.
The Aussies looked bewildered they could not field or catch
While Staffo on debut won a clear -- Goose Of The Match.

Game four would prove so crucial as the world were on the rack
To lose would see their hopes fade, there’d be no coming back.
The SCG the venue ( slightly crooked Ground ) the pitch and ground so poor
Brenda’s boomerang backyard would mean that runs were hard to score.

Stenno found some gumption and Macca put the ball to bed
While Herbie dropped a thousand catches to leave them in the red.
With the series in the balance the world took them for a ride
Two games each now for the series they regained a bit of pride.

Goodey’s place ! What can I say, a pitch out in the scrub
The Aussies secret weapon, Booga ! A sledger and a grub.
Not good enough to make the side he let his vengeance fly
A blind shirtfront on poor Rob saw the bastard nearly cry.

Ducky thought he owned the day with ten wickets for his spell
But Jonesy’s took no prisoners as he sent the world to hell.
A true Man of the moment he belted balls right off the park
A classic catch one handed saw the Aussies make their mark.

Game Six this was the pink test and with the World now on a roll
The Aussies looked to close the series to dig themselves out of a hole.
But they did not count on Chucky who destroyed them with the ball
When the cry went out for real men he answered every call.

But the highlight here was Rob, who had waited for his chance
And when Booga came to bat he really made the mongrel dance.
He got him twice to square the ledger and each one was just great.
They shook hands and had a Fourex cause this is mate up against mate.

The rain was not a dampener for the World let out a roar
They had squared the games at three all so the series was a draw.
Good enough to claim the prize and retain the victory crown
But they really are all winners when you set the proceeds down.

The series was a cracker, close fought so tough and hard
An idea born from fella’s just playing in the yard.
With Fourex as our sponsor we’ll grow stronger every year,
The charities that benefit are one’s we hold so dear.

So dig deep in your pockets for we’ve still got work to do
The total is still growing and it is up to me and you.
Backyard Cricket played with passion has never been so grand
So raise your stubbies high and Get A Goldie in ya Hand.

Yes, I think that's an area of expertise with many of our poets. Harking back to a previous discussion about getting out and promoting bush poetry, specific subject writing particularly for fundraising is a field where poetry certainly does have a positive role to play.

I'm sure there are many endeavours like yours that we don't hear about because the poetry doesn't always go beyond the targeted audience.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Well done Bob - I know from experience that this is not always easy, but you did them all proud and they must have really loved it!
