Our Flag, my version

Post by Zondrae » Thu Mar 31, 2011 7:57 am

A few weeks back we had this topic for our weekly homework. Remembering that this is just an exercise.. please overlook the errors and read it as a 'throw away' verse.
I think the actual topic was "A flag of our own".
I had a pretty good idea that everyone else would write about 'The' Flag so I tried to think outside the box. One other member brought a flag to support their poem. I was delighted that none were members of the 'rip out the Jack' brigade.

When we are at a Festival, whether big or small,
there’s one choice that we have to make that towers over all.
We like arriving early so that we can choose our spot
perhaps the same as last years but occasionally not.

We like to chat with friends we’ve made over many years.
and we all have a fav’rite spot. It’s easy for our peers
to find us but if it’s gone, the answer I have found
a standard or a pennant, high and fluttering around.

Because our name is King there’s just one image that will do
an icon, like a golden crown on red, outstanding too.
I have a bolt of cloth that’s red and surely I’d have gold
so I will make our ‘standard’. Have it ready to unfold.

The first time we could fly it would be Easter of this year.
Don’t camp at Illawarra cause it really is too near.
So looks like at the National when we’re in the camping zone
you’ll see it flying overhead, a new flag of our own.

*****************
... and, yes, I did make a banner and unfurled it at the end of the poem then ran round the room with it fluttering behind me. We will fly it at the National. It is Red, with a gold crown, about three metres long and narrow, tapering to a point. I took the idea from the pennants you see flying from jousting lances that knights carry when parading - in movies.

Love the poem, love the idea think that is great, now my Lady will just need a 'favour' to bestow upon the Knight who will fight for her.

One of your poems printed on parchment type paper and suitably rolled and tied and sealed with red wax should do it Zondrae...I now have visions of you and Wayne at one of the Medieval festivals my Brother is involved in.

Cheers

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.
