Hi Leonie,
The simplest stories are the easiest to tell.
I Agree with you, it was a great thing his wife and friends did for the old chap so that he could spend his last few hours out in the part of the country he loved so much. But how he managed to survive that long journey in the condition he was in amazes me.

Terry mate you again have touched a cord, great poem and a terrific story if only I could find these good words.

Back in the late eighties we did the abandoned Gun barrel hwy, a trip we had been talking about for a long time with my boys and a mate of many years, by the time we got our act together my mate had contracted cancer but would not be put off. So with a bucket load of medicine and a letter from his Doc we set off, 12 days late we arrived in Alice Springs and put our mate in the hospital, It was two weeks before he was allowed to fly home and he died a month later, the last thing he said to me was “Thanks mate the Gun barrel was the trip of a life time” each time I do one of these trips with my boys we sit by the camp fire and have a beer with Alan.

What a great story mate, when the time is right, perhaps you'll get to write a poem or a story about that thrip, it has the makings of a good'un.

We have lots of memories but some are really treasured ones, and when it comes to giving gifts they don't come any better that yours
mate.
