Stephen, the English got rid of their king and almost got the Republic of England with President Cromwell. When Cromwell died they joyfully welcomed back a king.

Yes, I know, but that was really just one small backward step in the glorious march towards democracy. The Republic of England under Cromwell would have been very different to the democracy they enjoy today.
