That's the QLD spelling Ross, coz they say it slower. :)

Hadn't heard that word before Marty.

vermilionize: it's in (the last line of) a prominent poem by a famous Australian poet.

Anyone?

An Answer to Various Bards by Banjo Paterson

"And then we'll come to Sydney and vermilionise the bars"

Note: I have used the spelling as found in my text. The use of 's' instead of 'z' from what I was taught was the preferred spelling for Australia and England.

Yes . . (sorry, Heather - those bloody post hi-jacking tangents at it again  ) Peely . . my old 1965 Angus and Robertson Collected Verse of A.B. has a "z".

To vermilionise the bars obviously means to "go on a bender". Where it originates I'm not sure?

Vermillion (Aust Oxford Dict) - cinnabar - a brilliant red pigment made from... or the Geddes or Gosset version - bright scarlet colour

A fancy way of saying "paint the town red" - what ya reckon?
