Marty, are you telling us that football has nothing to do with our culture? It is pretty deeply imbedded, me thinks. Imagine reiterating what you said to the Europeans and South Americans in reference to the World Cup!!!!!!! You would start a war!!! In fact, Germany are in the final, so Shhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Culture AUSTRALIA Marty! If you have a slightly relevant point then please respond. Otherwise, if you feel that football has no place in our culture, then please respond with some actual argument and facts. Otherwise it just sounds like a whinge and unsubstantiated rant.

I see today that a portrait of Australia's cultural ambassador, Sir Les Patterson, won the packing room award at the prestigious Archibald Prize. Perhaps the wisdom of Les might shed some light on the cultural significance of foopbaw. Sir Les has been known to write poetry. .

Again Nev, Football plays no part in the culture of Australia? Do not packed stadiums every Friday/Saturday/Sunday and Monday play no significant part of our culture? Seems a bit strange that you suggest, in the past, that the likes of Bach are more significant to our culture than State of Origin or the AFL Grand Final. Sorry but I just can't grasp this sort or comparison from you or Marty. Perhaps I am reading the figures wrong?

My comment about Sir Les was only tongue in cheek .
Did I suggest that Bach was more significant than football to Australian culture ? Heaven forbid that I would be so foolish

Culture is a wide field and takes in many things. In Australia they tell us we even have multiculture.
I suppose many would identify with the late entertainer Don Lane who was a fervent football supporter and commentator. He was asked what was his religion ( he was Jewish ) he replied " That's easy, FOOTBALL "
