WOOLLOOMOOLOO
The wistful old woman of Woolloomooloo
as a young girl loved sailors as all young girls do.
She never worked out if ‘twas the uniform
or their good looking faces that made her feel warm.
She’d wait on the quay side for ships to come in
and gave each one a welcome…her Tom, Dick and Jim,
and then in stilettos and short skirt – Hugo Boss,
she’d walk arm in arm with them down to the Cross .
They stopped at the pub for a beer and steak
they were always polite – and she made no mistake,
there was none of this nonsense of free love or play.
They were mates and good friendships made then stand today.
But long years have passed now, ships still come and go
but the young girl from Woolloomooloo’s not on show.
Well no doubt there are others – there would be for sure
for the lure of the sailor lasts for evermore.
Now the wistful old woman of Woolloomooloo
sits and dreams her old dreams and writes poetry too.
In her heart she is young, flighty, hot and still single,
but it's with old salts at RSL clubs she must mingle.
