Dave a couple of years back 2006 I won a trip to Bathurst and am not a big fan of any racing. But sitting in the private box above the start finish line I wrote this. Not too good but well it was a while back.

Bathurst @006

I'm not really into V8 racing
still I've watched it through the years
and to sit and watch it on TV
can drive a man to tears.

Then I won a trip to Sydney
friends said that it would be a treat
so believe me when I tell ya mate
Live V8'S are hard to beat.

I had no love of Holden
Or Falcon when I hit the track
but after that almighty race
you can bloody bet that I'll be back.

First the tribute went to Peter Brock
with so many brought to tears
He made that mountain race his own
for many many years.

Rev heads in all shapes and sizes
Young kids with petrol in their veins
so high on speed and octane fumes
they must have Shit for brains.

Screaming motors loud and powerful
and crazy fans in every seat
pit crews work at saving seconds
such excitement, hard to beat.

Perkins copped it early
I think I saw him swear
but he took poor Scafie with him
then foul language filled the air.

Skids and crashes, bumps and grinds
The early laps they had them all
But who would be there in the end
no one was game to call.

Down main straight at breakneck speed
their foot flat to the board
the fans all rose when someone crashed
a blood crazy screaming hoard.

They powered out of Sanyo corner
then up the Mountain Straight they flew
Holden Skyline held no terror
as the Dipper came in view.

Round the Elbow, gears protesting
their skills fantastic mate.
then they opened up the throttle
200 plus down Conrod Straight.

At speed they took the ssssss
through the Chase back onto main
and all in just two minutes ten
these guys must be insane.

One Sixty One the laps are
just to see who is the best.
a race to find one Champion
Machines and men put to the test.

The last few laps were hectic
Falcon holding on by just a tread
no quarter given or expected
fighting hard to stay ahead.

So close that they were touching
oh the battle was so tight
the speed of Lowndes Falcon
battling Kelly's Holdens might.

Then Lowndesy claimed the prize at last
the crowd screamed and yelled and ran
hundreds pouring down the main straight
a Ford flag in every hand.

There can only be one winner
Only one can come in first
but we saw history in the making
Falcon finally wins Bathurst.

Hmmm - never been a fan of the vroom vrooms myself, but I suppose having a view like you did could change my mind - at least for a while!
