'Muted Joy

'Bout time I contributed something. As December is now upon us, I thought something christmassy...brings to mind christmas bells...church bells...which reminded me of an episode involving a local monastery....

Muted Joy © Will Moody 2010

Our church has had a lick of paint. My word, it's looking dapper.
But the old church-bell is impotent because it's lost its clapper.

The 'noise abatement' rules enforced by councilmen and mayor
decree no more the bell shall call the faithful down to prayer.

No more shall wedding bells ring out for happy bride and groom.
'Midst traffic's roar and beat-box blare, for chimes there is no room.

At Easter and at Christmas-tide no carillons rejoice.
Because bureaucracy's gone mad, our church has lost its voice.

Your anguished protests count for nought: the law we must obey.
Church-bells shall henceforth silent be. (that is, 'til Judgement Day).

Very very good Will.

I admire the way you have looked at the seasonal events from a bit of a surprising angle.

The only dissent I have is that I don't think it's bureaucracy gone mad, it's bureaucracy acting out the logical result of their unthinking captivity to the spirit of the age of un-reason.

Love the poem and your sense of humour Will. I remember as a kid that I loved to hear the church bells when there was a wedding on. I don't think they do that any more :(
