HELD
She was holding the image of picnics and parrots
and warm summer grass and the snap of a twig
as RM's on six feet tramped loud through the bush,
and all kept an eye out for snake and wild pig.
A boy and his dog was the image he held,
the same boy on the footy field running the ball
as the cheers from the sidelines grew louder and louder,
but that son was lost in an overseas brawl.
That boy in their memories was always a young lad;
the dog now was old and its muzzle turned grey.
The green summer grass now surrounded the white cross.
Blue flags on their halyards snapped proud where he lay.
The day of remembrance arrived with bright sunshine,
a sweet masquerade of far happier times.
Handel's Dead March played by the band for their comrades
and heard far away the carillons chimes.
