Our English teacher in High School forbad us to use the word "got".

" Gott, gott. gott " he spat out "That's a German word. We're not German." :o

I can't see anything wrong with it. What about " gotten " ?

I like the poem, good bit of fun. You can use that when performing for the kiddies.
Make sure teacher is not listening.

...most of the impressions left on me by teachers have healed or faded now.... 8-) Funny thing though, a few days ago I met a bloke with the surname Haskard, I said I had a teacher calle Rex Haskard in high school, turned out to be this blokes uncle....I threatened to take him out side and pay him for some of the floggings I got from his uncle Rex......then I though about the ones I didn't get and should have, so I thought we would call it evens......

Neville we must have had the same teacher! ;) I also had a teacher who despised the word "got" and even now I try not to use it. Funny thing is, he was a maths teacher! :)

and here is me, thinking I was the only one<

G'day everyone, I. too, dislike the word 'got'. It really has no meaning on it's own but attaches itself to other words and tags along. Again it is the result of a teacher - stating there is no such word as 'got' in the English language. She also set the task of replacing the word 'got' in a series of sentences. Once I had completed this exercise it was clear that there really is no circumstance when 'got; can't be replaced with a much more descriptive word or group of words. I'm with you Heather when we say, I try very hard not to use it - particularly in writing.

I like the little poem, Marty, although it has the feel of a joke - converted.

Joke poem, Marty. Not even a very good joke, but at least you made it into something acceptable. But according to any dictionary, got is the past tense of get, so I don't see a problem with that word. If our vocabulary Police had their way here then every word from good to nice to happy to 'bouyant' would be disallowed. Ignore them mate, or we would be a pretty sterile pack of 'writers????' lol

Enjoyed your twist on an old joke, mate. Nice, good and I got it!
