Nasty Nancy
I am delighted that the children also rated this poem which I had written specially for the Toolangi Festval. It came third in the section of 'Adults writing for Children'.
Nasty Nancy
Zondrae King(Corrimal) 08/12
Now Nancy was a nasty girl, her jokes were so intense.
She often kept herself amused at other folk’s expense.
She’d pin a sign on someone’s back and cause them some unease
when people followed Nancy’s sign which stated “Kick me please”.
She’d glue the pencils in the tin so none of us could draw
and throw our hats up on the roof or nail them to the floor.
She’d push the little kids around and even took their lunch.
Yes, I suppose it’s clear, she was the bad one of the bunch.
She’d laugh and laugh at anyone who slipped or tripped or fell.
Yes, she’s the one to blame the time the cat fell down the well.
The other kids grew sick of this and made a plan at school
to get her back, they’d play a trick, and make her feel the fool.
They got a great big spider, just a rubber one of cause,
and put it in a sandwich - topped it with tomato sauce.
Then slipped it in her lunch box then they waited for a while
and wondered if she’d see the joke. Would Nancy cry or smile.
The lunch bell rang as usual, they all came out from class
and Nancy grabbed her lunchbox and she sat down on the grass.
I said before that Nancy was as nasty little thing,
for lunch she had a favourite spot, alone, beside the swing
The other kids were watching her, they knew about the joke
they all prepared to laugh and jeer, but she began to choke.
The kids, looked at each other thinking this is such a lark
but saw the danger in their plan as thing were turning dark.
At first her face went cherry red and then it changed to blue
and after that it went a kind of purple/greyish hue.
Poor Nancy coughed and spluttered, all the others stood well back
then ‘fatty’ Simpson limbered up and wacked her on the back.
The spider flew from Nancy’s throat away up in the air
and tangled in the curly back of year two teacher’s hair.
Now Nancy had recovered and she saw the spider land
by instinct, she hit out, but with her lunch box in her hand.
It knocked the teacher senseless much to all the kids surprise.
Then Nancy began blubbering. They couldn’t believe their eyes.
But everything was sorted as the teacher soon came to.
They all got extra homework. What else could the teacher do?
The kids are now all mates. Their difference worked out in the end.
They don’t play any dirty ticks and Nancy is their friend.
Some days they get together and they talk and laugh about
the day that Nancy’s lunchbox spider knocked the teacher out.

Re: Nasty Nancy
Congratulations, Zondrae!
I submitted two poems in the 'Adults Writing for Children' category, but they sank without a trace. Must be losing my touch!

Re: Nasty Nancy
Thanks Stephen,
I also had other poems in the comp, without any result. I'm sure you haven't lost your touch. You are writing (and posting) much more than I have been. Mind you in the past few weeks it seems to be turning round. Say no more, don't want to jinx it.
