Let me just say, before anyone leaps to any conclusion, that this is a work of complete fiction. :o

Cold Feet
Marion Tremlett

I had been standing there, feeling so proud -
I should have been happy, laughing aloud
but as I waited, there descended a cloud
that smothered, surrounded me like a shroud
and I found I couldn't do it.

I watched you approach in your veil and your gown,
but you saw my face crease with a sorrowful frown
as our eyes met; and yours right away did fill and drown
for you knew, you knew I would let you down -
that I couldn't, wouldn't do it.

Into my hands you had placed your trust
and I cruelly turned your dreams to dust.
For what, you said? Or for whom? No, not for lust -
Your bewilderment, your grief, your angst was just,
but I simply couldn't do it.

For my heart had seemed to skip and falter,
those vows, forever, my life would alter
and I felt strangled as by a tightening halter,
so sadly, I left you to cry at the altar,
'cos I knew I just couldn't do it.

Your eyes, dulled and filled with pain
still haunt my dreams, now and again.
Regrets? Not now, not in the main
for I've acknowledged at last that I, John am Jane
and I'm glad I didn't do it.
