Lost my little dog about four years ago.

MY TRUE VALENTINE

Every year this day it comes around
I can't help but think of you.
I sit and ponder good times had
and ain't there been a few.

You were there each and every day
your smile greeted me each morn.
Always happy , never sad
never showing looks forlorn.

Your happiness was so infectious
that it filled my heart with glee.
Of all the people you could love
you saved it all for me.

Ten years we were together
you pined when off to work I’d dash.
But when I came home at end of day
you were there to meet me in a flash.

A warm cuddle and a hug you gave
those simple things in life are free.
your head gently rested on my lap
as you sat quietly on my knee.

You asked for little in return
a warm bed on which to lay your head.
A little bit of extra comfort
through the thunder storms you dread.

Yes you really were my one best friend
Annie you were just divine.
Though you were just a little dog
you’ll always be my one true valentine.

I get it We can never replace them, each one is special and holds a place in our hearts, and what a welcome we will get when we are finally reunited upstairs.

Our old Rotty X signed his death warrant last week, he was going to go and live his final years with our son, but now he is going to the great doghouse in the sky...this weekend!.....He bit our granddaughter on the face last weekend!...silly old thing. (She has a couple of holes in her beautiful little face, hopefully they will heal up OK with no scarring, I love dogs, but not when they do silly things like that!

That's really sad about your dog Ross. Dogs can get a bit cranky in their old age - I know of another where a similar thing happened. Thank goodness your grand daughter wasn't badly hurt.

Bob, my wife and I have been married for 49 years and for 46 of them never owned nor wanted to own a pet. Then our grand-daughter talked us into buying a Maltese/Shi Tzu cross puppy. I think, so she could play with it on her numerous stay overs. Now I can't imagine life without (Harry) it. Your poem says it all and so did Rudyard Kipling when he wrote 'The Power of the Dog'. This is the last verse of that poem.
