The archetypal country town in a nutshell...and no prizes for guessing which church sits 'upon the highest hill'!

What was that you said once, about lighting the blue paper, Matt

Goodonya Heather. An example of less is more. :) Isn't it interesting how those sharply focused little details can be much more "realistic" than a whole page of tedious explanation.

Three pub towns are becoming scarcer every day.

Thanks poets. The idea came ages ago when reading Kenneth Slessor's "Country Towns". Mine is very different to his but it got me thinking about how I viewed the country towns in my district - elements taken from each of them. More ideas in the pot for another time.

Thanks David. Satisfying to know I didn't have to call it "Country Town" to get my message across. :D

Marty, archetypal, as David says; I hope.

Matt, name me a small town that has a mosque. :)

Thanks Neville. Lawson did it the best.. :)

The town of Kilmore once had something like 30 pubs in the district (plus sly grog shanties). The coming of the railway changed the scene totally.

Bob, if I have painted a picture for you my day is complete..... :)

Heather :)

There's a mosque in Broome, if you count Broome as a small town. :)

By the way, I have to be pedantic as usual, a mosque is not a church.

There's a modern piece of music by , I think the Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe, called Small Town. It's a great evocative piece. At the end it features the playing of the last post, depicting the town's war memorial.

Neville, you can't give Matt the answers; he needs to do his own homework

Ok Neville, definition of small town? Homework for you.... :)

Where will I find that definition ? Broome is a small town compared to Baghdad or Cairo.

You can listen to Peter Sculthorpe's piece by going to Small Town -YouTube. Try and persevere right through, it's good.

I'll try. My internet might be too slow. It's painful to try and watch You-tube clips.

But is Broome a small town compared to Ballarat, Broadford or Baddaginnie? :)
