Rumination on the Limitations of Living One's Life as a Cephalopod
Give a thought to the squid,
For it can't live in fresh
Water. Just salt. Do you know, if it did
It would shrivel its flesh.
Have a care for the cuttle-
Fish. It is the same.
Fresh water would scuttle
It. Can't lift its game.
Say a prayer for the octo-
Pus. Travels the seas
With the grace of Jean Cocteau,
But creeks bring disease.

Nice work Stephen. Interesting to think of the interesting adaptations creatures that can survive in both salt and fresh water must have...

Thanks, Robyn. Yes, there was an article about it on the ABC web-site. It all got a bit lost, and I don't think anybody knows why cephalopods can't adapt to fresh water, but the point is, they can't!

Did you mean Jean Cocteau, the artist/poet or Jacques Costeau the ocean explorer or his son Jean Michael Costeau the enviromentalist?
Sorry if that seems piccy but trying to work out the link with Jean Cocteau and the ocatopus other than that maybe he ate them

Cocteau, not Costeau. It was the only rhyme I could think of. Yes, the link is pretty tenuous - if it exists at all!
