A True Story.

Saturday night and Bretty was keen
to see if the tailor were on
so down to the pin he journeyed
thinkin’ “Man this is gonna be fun.”

Now the pin was awash with house boats and all
but Bretty was never concerned.
Thought “I’ll find me a spot and have me a ball
catching tailor with tricks that I’ve learned.”

The top end of Crusoe was first on his list.
A spot where he’d often done well.
But arriving, he looked round decidedly pissed.
No room here was easy to tell.

By this time the weather was closing in fast
so he found a nice beach while still light.
Got all of his gear stowed and covered at last
and settled right in for the night.

But just as he thought things were going so well
and he’d pulled his boat up on the sand,
the tide came up high as a church steeple bell
and loud as a rock and roll band.

By the time it receded poor Bretty was stuffed
and the tailor were not playing fair.
Just some undersized bream were coming on board.
It was more than poor Bretty could bear.

But if you think that was the worst of it all
well I’m here to say that’s not the last.
He got out of the boat to answer the call
and stepped on a broken beer glass.

Stuff this Bretty thought better get back inside.
A few beers and I’ll call it quits.
With the rain and the wind and the noise of the boats
what a night! It fair gives me the shits.

Then suddenly morning… the boat’s high and dry.
Got to get it back down to the drink.
And he thought “The way my luck’s been going,
there’s a very good chance it’ll sink.

But it didn’t and Bretty got back to the ramp
and he thought “Will I do it again?
Yep! I’m tired and I ache and I’m cold and I’m damp,
but I’d still give it 9 out of 10.

Thanks Maureen and yes ... true story. Bretty is one of my fishing mates and he posted the story on our fishing club forum. I thought there was enough in it to get a few verses.

Thanks Neville. Not unusual that youngsters fish better than their dads. Kids learn so quickly from both their observations and their mistakes.
