The song is ended

Not a bush poem, sorry, but I wrote this after listening to Nat King Cole's version of 'The Song is Ended'. Great song ... great singer/musician.
The Song Is Ended
I remember a yesterday
when you looked back at me
as you danced past.
I almost forgot the words
that I’d spent so long rehearsing.
I hurried to the second time bar
and waited for the moment
when you’d reach the coda.
But I stumbled
and dropped my recorder.
You laughed then and posted your
song to the wind.
It brought your answer back to me
and I thought to harmonise
but the melody kept changing key
and so I paid it no heed,
until later, when I read it on facebook.
That’s when I took the words out
and played them one last time.
but the melody lingers on.
