A Fair Dinkum Aussie Icon

A few years back I decided to combine a love for cooking (baking especially) with that of writing, to produce a cook book in which recipes and their illustrations were to be accompanied by a piece of poetry that related to the dish. My intended target was those males whose only cooking experience was over a bbq plate. I thought I was going to make some big bickies (pun intended). I got about half way and ran out of puff. (and I don't mean pastry).

Front cover was to read …

Beyond The Barbeque

For Guys Who’d Like To Cook
And
Girls Who’d Like Their Guys To Cook

I’ve got a tale to tell ya,
about an Aussie icon.
Been around since Pardon won the cup.
It’s not that smart to look at.
Won’t find pictures inside ‘Vogue’.
But Aussie’s worth their salt will hold it up,
as something truly worthy
of standing side by side
with Pharlap, Bondi Beach, the Holden Car;
with Vegemite, Pavlova, Ned Kelly, Ginger Meggs;
Hills Hoist, Victa Mower, Malvern Star.
You’ll find it at the footy.
You’ll find it at the beach.
Wherever rivers run and mountains rise.
In the cities, in the outback,
no matter where you look.
You’ll see Aussies making love to hot meat pies.
