I was looking through my files this morning and found this old one, I don't seem to be able to get inspired lately so I thought I would post this one again!

THE COCKIES GATE

© Ross Magnay 25/10/09

When cockies build a bloody gate,
they never stop to contemplate,
the trouble it may well create,
when unskilled folk approach.

The city people stop and stare,
for they are just not so aware,
that wire and droppers hanging there,
need skill to operate.

Some people with a high degree,
much smarter blokes than you or me,
just stand and look if they can see,
the trick behind this thing.

Gingerly they slip the latch,
barbs and droppers soon dispatch,
and if it’s just a little scratch,
I’d say they got off light!

Tangled now and laying slack,
we move on forward down the track,
but they will have to put it back,
the fun will now begin!

They stand and scratch their clever head,
they never heard a word we said,
their hands are showing signs of red,
as we sit back and smile.

They pick it up to sort it out,
they twist and turn it round about,
but they just cannot work it out,
…….so we shut the thing ourselves.

Oh that is so good    Laughed a lot reading it - we had two of these mongrel things and I could never put them back up once opened - they are so ingeneous and cheap though and work a treat. - wonder who thought of them originally?

That was the one thing I really hated being out on a property - being the 'gate person'

A very funny poem Ross. Aussies (in particular) have a bent sense of humour. Whenever one of us gets it wrong etc our mates laugh. My wife thinks there's nothing funnier than me when I'm deep in it.

G/day Ross,
Like you I imagine I've come across every type imaginable at one time or another, and did my share at swearing at them as well.
Also laid down the odd fence from time to time, but always made sure they were put up properly again after passing through.

Cheers Terry

Great poem Ross, those gates are mongrels and when you are riding shotgun you have to get out to open them and getting them undone ( without cutting yourself on the barbwire) is no mean feat but when the thing is on the ground and you have to put it back... well.. that 's a real challenge.... and when you are striving for equality to admit you are beat is a real pain!! My brother-in-law, I felt was always laughing at me behind that mere grimace.
My brother, when no one was around, would get even and nail an empty fourex tinnie to the fence-post knowing that some time down the track the B.I.L would curse him.
Good poem brought back good memories.

cheers
