Pioneers

As I wandered down the dusty trail my mind began to drift away
back to those hardy pioneers of days gone by.
The ones who made this country stronger with their sweat and endless toil
On a land so harsh beneath a sunburnt sky.

They struck out through the virgin bush to make a new life in this land
of heat and dust and endless swarming flies.
Built their homes of rough hewn timber, tilled the fertile outback soil
surviving by whatever means they could devise.

The life was tough and torrid no quarter given nor none asked
to start a brand new life their only quest.
But still through all the hardship the drought and the endless pain
they considered still that they were really blest.

There is no way to repay them for the legacy that they have left
in a nation free to make a brand new start.
For they left us with a future in this land we now call home
We can but hold their memories in our heart.
