State of Origin
Some wonder why we love it and why victory is so sweet
They marvel at the passion every time that these teams meet.
I know it would seem strange to those not in the know
but it’s embedded in our culture and the history makes it so.
The year was nineteen hundred plus another eight
That’s when the game was born a clash of state up against state.
Queensland was soundly beaten, forty three nil, such a sin
Another thirteen years would pass before they finally had a win.
With guts and sheer determination they fought for Queenslands pride
Five years of hard fought battles slowly turned the swelling tide.
We lost so many players which New South Wales were quick to claim
They played for New South Wales but were only there by name.
Then in nineteen eighty came the birth of what we see today
A team of Queenslands finest primed and ready for the fray.
they had waited for this moment because Queenslanders never yield
The crowd went off their face when Artie Beetson took the field.
They won that game through guts and pride a passion for their state.
And so was born the battle cry of mate up against mate.
Their legacy's is set in stone and a mighty legend did it spawn
one hundred hard fought games on the ground where it was born
The history books have been rewritten by this current Queensland side
Eight series wins now in a row a tag they wear with pride.
The pressures on the Blues now and they must step up to the mark
dare they even dream of victory as they face the deadly dark.
Yes on Lang Parks hallowed turf the blues will face their greatest fear
But the sweet victory cry of
“ Queenslander “
will be the last thing that they hear.
