THE SECRET PLACE

It’s been so quiet I thought I’d better see if I could dig up something to post.
This is an old one, not sure whether it was a homework one from one of the forums or not, or whether it was posted before somewhere. Terry

THE SECRET PLACE

On misty morns the forest drips and leaves are wet with dew;
the smoke-like mist hangs in the air to blur a pristine view.
It gladdens hearts of all who walk along this winding track;
you’re taken by its beauty as you pass the old bush shack.

Sun touches then a foggy grove and melts the mist away
and dries dew laden bushes with a warming solar ray.
Its gentle glow then brings to life the hidden places where
exquisite flowers open up, so beautiful and rare.

There’s dappled light in leafy glens where filtered sun peeps through,
to light up ferns and rushes where the spider orchids grew.
The tiny stream that trickles by and slowly makes its way,
now whispers of a secret place, it travels through each day.

So sweet is natures music with its golden notes of sound,
from throats of feathered songsters as it echoes all around.
And heralds yet another day along this forest trail,
this place of untouched beauty, that’s so delicate and frail.

Some lofty Karri still remain and reach up to the sky
to overlook the forest as the fleecy clouds drift by.
a golden whistler calls its mate from somewhere down below,
it’s deep within a shaded nook where moss and lichens grow.

Down through the gorge’s rocky slopes the creek meanders by
and breaks out from the undergrowth to view the bright blue sky.
Then tumbles over tiny falls to splash on rocks below.
to flow on through the forest where the Queen Of Sheba’s Grow.*

The scent of wild boronia with perfume so supreme,
now drifts throughout this magic place where sparkling waters gleam.
The air is fresh and fragrant where so few have trod before;
its beauty trapped within my heart, to stay for evermore.

Good one Terry, enjoyed it!
Your mention of the 'lofty Karri' reminded me of when I was over your way in '07 and climbed the big one near Pemberton, Sixty something metres I think it was. It was a calm day but there was still quite a bit of sway up the top, would be no place to be in a high wind! As I got to the half way point there was a young Japanese girl who had 'frozen' could not move, she had a friend with her who was trying to gently coax her down. She was succesful in the end as they had made it to the ground by the time I came back down, she was quite shaken though.

Thanks Bill
A bit different from my usual, but as Neville said things have been a bit quite,
so thought I'd delve back into the archives so to speak and try to find something I could post.

Cheers Terry

G/day Ron,
The poem was set in the general Pemberton area the way it used to be 40 years or more ago.
In those days all the streams were pristine and full of trout. That was before clear felling got fully underway and although it's still a magic place, it has like so many other places lost a little of that magic.
I've heard of other people who froze when climbing the Glouster Tree, there are several others (or were) scattered about that are (or were) used as fire lookouts.

Cheers Terry

Thanks Wazza,
There are some really beautiful areas down around Pemberton and other places in the South & South West of WA.
Better put it on your bucket list to visit mate.
