THE HOLD-UP AT THE HERMATAGE

Ellar McKellar McLinley,
physician of some renown,
set up his medical practice
just north of old Dungog town.

Perched overlooking the Williams,
'The Hermitage' proudly stood.
Home to the resident doctor;
life was remarkably good.

Ellar McKellar McKinley
wanted the whole world to see
silverware fashioned in Scotland,
fruit of his family tree.

The magistrate of the district,
Thomas Cook happened on by,
warning McKellar McKinley,
too easy for scoundrels to spy.

"Doctor, be hiding your trophies
You know of the Jew Boy gang
I won't rest 'til they are all captured,
I'll see each one of them hang."

Ellar McKellar McKinley
Said he would not live in fear
Two hired hands would protect him
Should blaggards ever come near

But both servants, named Gaunt and Grimes,
Had entered into a pact
With one of the bushranger gang
Who wanted McKinley attacked.

The bushranger rode up the pathway
The servants raised the alarm
The doctor appeared on the porch
a musket hung on his arm.

Gaunt and Grimes turned on the doctor
'Hands up' is all that Grimes said.
Gaunt struck a blow with a pick axe
cracking the poor doctor's head.

The musket went off and shot Grimes
The two men sank to the ground
The bounty was gathered in pouches
Taken to never be found.

Ellar McKellar McKinley
recovered, as too did Grimes.
Gaunt was soon found and arrested.
He and Grimes hanged for their crimes

The silverware was to return
Jew Boy gang captured as well
And Ellar McKellar McKilney
had quite a tale he could tell.
