Battered But Not Beaten

Cyclone Marcia

Cyclone Marcia came to town and vented all her fury
Mother nature won’t be tamed she sits as judge and jury.
Our feeble efforts were in vain as all was swept before
the raging winds and surging tides that battered every door.

Lives and houses torn to shreds, some sit and ponder why ?
years of toil destroyed in seconds, the blinking of an eye.
But through the pain and suffering a spirits burning bright
communities both big and small are working day and night.

We give our thanks that all were spared the agony and cost
through the carnage and destruction not a single life was lost.
From all parts of Australia they come keen to lend a hand
Aussies helping Aussies from all across this wide brown land.

So now we start to build again for our hearts a solid core
we join as one to help all those in need as spirits start to soar.
Battered but never beaten we will fight to put things right
We will survive to fight again and the futures looking bright.

Great poem Bob. 'Battered but never beaten' - reminds me of one I wrote a few years back with similar point made about the Aussie spirit in adversity. You have captured it well.

We had 15 Aurizon workers just turn up on Tuesday because one of their mates lives in the park and spent two days cleaning up all the fallen timber. That is the lake in the distance.

Aussie spirit alive you betcha

This is the front camping area we are onto this today but gees it is bloody hot. I am really earning these rums.

Good to see you survived OK Bob. I remember Cyclone David near Rocky in the 70s but that was a pimple compared to what Marcia packed.

Best wishes Jeff

Excellent poem Bob - really captures the spirit of fighting on regardless! I wrote a similar one after the devastating floods of 2013 - centred on what was happening here in Maryborough. Adversity can sometimes bring out the worst in people, but thankfully it more often brings out the best.

All the best with the cleanup and recovery efforts.

Cheers, Shelley
