Antarctica

Post by Stephen Whiteside » Fri Apr 10, 2015 7:26 pm

Antarctica

Antarctica's no paradise.
It's very cold, and ringed with ice.
Whales swim there. They all have lice.
I'd gladly go there in a trice.
Alas, I can't afford the price.

It once was Mankind's chiefest goal
To travel to the southern Pole.
Amundsen, in heroic role,
Filled in at last the final hole
Upon our maps. Let's toast him! Skol!

But now, alas, the ice bergs shrink.
The global climate's on the blink.
The carbon price creates a stink.
Some seek refuge in strong drink.
I'm sure I don't know what to think.

I only know where albatross
Wheel gracefully as oceans toss;
Where plant life is confined to moss,
And Mankind isn't quite the boss,
We face, perhaps, a tragic loss.

I guess it's paradise if you have myrmecophobia.

That's a fear of ants.

ANTarctica is the only continent with no ants.

The biggest land animal is actually a massive wingless midge which measures a whopping half inch.

I seem to detect an influence of C.J.Dennis, the rhythm of some of those pieces in Book for Kids.
