OF HEART AND MIND

Why must a heart be ruler
of an oft too feeble mind.
Dictator of a passion
when no reason one can find.

Why must a heartbeat quicken
and words be twisted so
to make us fools and simpletons
to those we choose to know.

Why must an eye to linger
on a beauty rare and pure
though far beyond our prudent reach
the stronger be the lure.

Why must our flights of fancy
upraise us from the ground
when sanity and sanctity
in normality abound.

A heart and mind at constant odds
alas must take their toll,
when wrestling with one's conscience
becomes a struggle of the soul.

Neither artisan nor tradesman,
no, neither heart nor mind,
lay claim to rhyme and reason
when no reason one can find.
