VERSE FOR MOTHER
It's cold outside, too early for the sun
and you are covered in your knitted blanket.
You should be warm, but yet your face is cool,
the blush that lit your cheeks is all but gone.
There's four of us, you knew from our first breath;
four, joined together by a bond
that never can be changed or pulled apart
until the day that we are called by death.
There's no more dinners, no more cakes to bake,
those washing days and sewing nights are over.
No more children's birthday cards and presents;
but nothing's done in vain, done for love's sake.
You're safe now from the demons that pursued you
and no more anxious thoughts need press your mind.
It's up to us to build on what you left us,
your task is all complete, no more to do.
We'll brush your hair and gently wipe your face;
that's how you did it for us years ago.
We'll tuck you in and say a little prayer
asking that you can be at rest and peace
now that you've gone to sleep.
