STRANGE FRUIT ... Maureen Clifford © The Scribbly Bark Poet
A froth of blossom pink and white
danced along on joyous toes
amongst the paddocks shivery grass
thousands of apple trees in rows.
The rain washed fruit - some plump and green
and others shaded damson hue
festooned the lovely dancing trees
with glazed colours – 'neath skies of blue.
And gentle winds caressed the boughs
a shush fell over every chair.
On the big screen was Lady Day -
the blast of trumpets filled the air.
The last notes of her lone song lingered
a haunting chord – under duress.
Folks laughed and talked and raised their glasses.
Jazz and James - Holiday success.

The incomparable Billie Holiday - and that haunting last note.
Very different fruits indeed.
Nice one, Maureen
