This one's a bit ordinary, one of my early attempts.

I recycle it for people of NSW who have to vote in the state election shortly.

Feel free to point out any deficiencies.

THE LOCAL MEMBER

Please ; vote for me. I guarantee
a candidate of quality.
I'll mend the roads and fix the drains
and soothe your economic pains.
I'll make your streets and homes secure;
defeat the criminals for sure.
Your health will go from good to best,
your children's education blessed.
Paradise on earth you'll see
if, you take care to vote for me.

The votes are counted carefully;
a triumph for democracy,
you've voted in the state election.
Vote 1, for me ! was your selection.
Ah, what a day of celebration,
now I'm assured my elevation.
I'll take my seat, and brave and bold
I will.....the party's vote uphold,
make sure allowances are claimed
and press releases aptly framed.

I'm so important now. You see
I'm on a goodly salary.
Can't spend much on the sick and poor,
I need new office furniture.
But I will drive the fight on crime
( if only I could find the time )
and health and roads and education
someday, might get consideration.
To what success should I aspire ?
An indexed pension and retire !
Then I'll not need your votes, I'll be
director of a company.

Do I feel just a touch of cynicism there Neville?

Very clever mate - should be distributed along with the how to vote cards IMO

Cheers

Sounds like the standard rally speech, I like the way it bounces along. :P

Thanks for the reply Dave.

Why would anyone be cynical about Australian politics Maureen ? :D

...or indeed any politics at all Neville - they all seem to be a breed apart, tarred with similar brushes! Enjoyable poem, and I agree with Dave that the metre bounces along very nicely and suits the subject.
