What a delightful poem, full of imagery of time gone by.
Beautifully crafted and a delight to read, and re-read.
Excellent work, Heather Knight

You set the bar high.

Exciting times back then Heather.
I can see it in your words, as the scene comes alive.

Good on you Heather. Naming things precisely makes lively imagery.
Those Kelly's are a sus lot though

Sometimes I set the bar too high for myself Allan!

I laboured like one of those bullocks over this one.
Thanks Allan,
Heather

Exciting times indeed Terry and sometimes I think I was born in the wrong century, but then I remember how much I enjoy my hot shower and the convenience of electricity!
I've just finished reading "Wild Ride" by Samuel Everingham which is the story of Cobb and Co. Fascinating and informative read with some intriguing characters if anyone is interested.
This poem is based on real people. Hugh (known as Hughie) Mitchell was one of Cobb and Co.'s drivers and well known in Kilmore where this scene is set. Matthew and Mary Kelly ran the Kilmore Hotel (very well respected people Neville!) and Cobb and Co had an office there. There was also a huge stable able to house 30 something horses and a coach factory. In later years Hugh Mitchell was charged with embezzling Cobb and Co but was found not guilty - there's a story there I'd like to discover. Kilmore was one of the staging posts for the journey to Beechworth and the Ovens (and Albury).
Kilmore has several churches (a brand for every sinner!) all on the hills and a gaol also on a hill. Quinns was a hotel.
Neville I know the place and the scene so well I'm in it.

Fantastic Heather, I absolutely love it! As I read it I can see these images as if I'm watching a movie - you have really captured the sights and sounds perfectly. This really is a poem to be proud of!
