Over the weekend, I had the great good fortune to see the performances of three highly talented Americans, who call themselves 'The Lonesome Rangers', at Port Fairy Folk Festival. They consist of cowboy poet Waddie Mitchell, and husband and wife team Hal Cannon and Teresa Jordan, who sing songs, play various instruments, and tell stories. They bill themselves as 'original cowboys' from the 'Big Open' around Nevada and other parts of the American West.

There is a beautifully understated authenticity to their work, and they seem to have an inexhaustible supply of material.

The Lonesome Rangers are proceeding on a national tour, in the company of Ted Egan.

Here are the details:

(Catch them if you can!)

15 March – Clarence Park, Adelaide, Trinity Sessions, 8 PM, Eric Bogle and Lonesome Rangers

16 & 17 March – McLaren Vale Winery, Singing Gallery, 8PM, Ted Egan & Lonesome Rangers

23 March – Brunette Downs – private event

28 March – Alice Springs, Sink a Tinny Downs House Concert and barbeque, Ted Egan and Lonesome Rangers

4 April – Sydney, Humph Hal, 7PM, Lonesome Rangers

9-13 April – Hal working at Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) National producing one-hour radio special on the legendary folklorist John Lomax with the wonderful producer Sherre Delys.

(We are working to fill in more house concerts in the Sydney area 4-14 April)
