I DID IT MY WAY
Ladies and Gentlemen I call you here to listen to the words of a liar.
Nothing you see or read here is the truth I confess I’m a sham but a tryer.
No mountains of snow did I climb to the peak
no lost tribes in Africa did I once seek
and never upon elephants did I sneak
though I confess once ‘twas my desire
but alas I am not a high flyer.
I’ve travelled the cities – more than I can count and ridden on buses and trains
I’ve told of my exploits, my brave daring do, on volcanoes and savannah plains.
But now I confess to the sham of my tales
I never once rode in a longboat to whales
as for meeting Tarzan – here my memory fails
though I’ve actually seen monsoon rains
as well as Tutankhamen’s remains.
I think that the best I can say in defence of my totally deplorable behaviour,
is that as a young child poor and downtrodden, I always found books were my savour.
The pictures and words carried me away
to far distant shores and adventures, and they
became realer than real – I was held in their sway
and I state now without fear or favour
they’ve enticed me to sail to Australia.
So Ladies and Gentlemen I beg of you do not judge me too harshly today,
for I know you’ve enjoyed all the stories I’ve told and my photos just blew you away.
Once I’ve sailed ‘cross the seas I’ll send letters to home
and tell of the outback that I plan to roam,
the end of this story might just start a tome
on exploring Australia per se
with the title ‘ I did it my way.’

I may not always succeed in making a difference, but I will go to my grave knowing I at least tried.
