things have been on a bit slow on the po'ing front so I am on a mission to bring to the front some poems that seemed to fall by the wayside back in the early days...this one is a a little gem IMO.

Hi Maureen,Heather & Neville...thanks for "revisiting" my poem. I have been "off-site" for quite a while and only just popped in to have a quick read. Glaringly obvious spelling mistake ...thanks Neville! I think it was more like a "Sir Les Patterson" mistake rather than a "Dame Edna" one!!

Nice poem. Neville, you're getting slack! There's only one 'nature', so the apostrophe becomes before the 's' in the second last line, not after it.

Cans

You'll find them in the camp-fires, where they're burnt to charcoal black.
You'll find them in the billabongs. You'll find them on the track.
You'll find them on the mountain-top. You'll find them on the beach.
You'll find them in odd places that you thought past litter's reach.

They're often brightly coloured, when all around is pale.
The landscape that seemed very fresh will suddenly feel stale.
You'll find them stomped and crumpled, and you'll find them quite intact,
But you'll travel far to lose them. That's a dismal, hard-earned, fact.

They might have once held salmon, but they're mostly built for beer,
And if I could avoid them all, be sure, that's where I'd steer.
I am not a fan of bottles. They are never in my plans,
But even worse than bottles are those bright, abandoned cans!

I did some picking on that Clean Up Australia Day, along the side of the road out near Bourke, a very isolated, small rural town in the far north west of NSW, and it was astonishing, the amount of cans and bottles strewn along the roadside.

Do States,West, East and North of out state's borders NOT have compulsory deposits on these.

The subjects of both your poems keep the Charity budgets balanced in South Australia. EVERY drink bottle, carton and can, (except Milk in Milk Cartons) regardless of contents carry a 10 cents refund at shops and recycling yards. The Charities have their own collection sites in and around the state. On weekends all sorts of community clubs make money by collecting these items plus newspapers, directly from private homes of anyone who asks.

Silly me thought this was a Australia wide thing to do!

When next you travel cross our border check the sides of the roads.
