American Pie was inspired by the death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP "The Big Bopper" Richardson in a plane crash on 3 February 1959.
Some also say it refers to the changes that occurred in music and culture from the 1950's to the 1960's.

It was certainly a big favourite in our household when the kids were very young. We spent hours dancing to that song!

Sorry Glenny I thought it was about apple pie, drinking at the dam and court jesters ?????
But then I could be wrong.

Re: C J Dennis poem query -Attn Dr Stephen
smacks to me of how long is a piece of string - it is like a circular poem that goes round and round with no definitive answers ever given - and then when he passes himself going home - thinking at first that he has met a stupid man but then realizing of course it is himself he sees, he knows HE can't be stupid because he has asked all the questions. But now his alter image is going back into the towns to ask the same questions again and the cycle repeats itself.
That's my take on it - how long is a piece of string? Anyone out there know???
I think kids would love it because of the funny sounding place names and the utter silliness of it which is lovely really if you think about it.
A lovely bit of nonsense. Why do things have to mean anything if we don't wan't them to - it is refreshing to have a little whimsy some time - because it doesn't have to fit into any moulds.
Cheers

I once had a really old stinky piece of cheese, Maureen, but it wouldn't fit into any moulds.

Assuming its length is not infinite, Vic. Have you been checking out that string theory?
