Adieu

Post by Maureen K Clifford » Sat Feb 04, 2012 8:26 am

Adieu

Under a stone wrapped in a box
is a mouse that I caught in the wainscot.
Cheeky grey beggar who stole without words
but to his pilfering I’ve put a full stop.
Today it is windswept, with rain in your face
I’m burying him in this loneliest place
so the cat will not find him and cause a disgrace
by bringing him back to the kitchen.

The moggy I tell you is useless - it’s true
as a mouser he is a class failure,
he’s sulking, ignoring me as darn cats do
the biggest grey wuss in Australia.
If mouse sat on the other side of the street
this Russian Blue would hide right here at my feet
which is why the mouse burial was quite discreet,
couldn’t stand all the moanin’ and bitchin’.

Now I won’t have to hear that mouse scratching no more
for he’s heavenward bound – the wee beastie.
My burnt toast and pumpkin seeds he will ignore,
he requires no more mouse midnight feastie.
The frayed rope he chewed I’ve replaced now with new,
the hole in the sofa is patched – this I rue.
White linen sheets cleaned of mouse droppings. Adieu
cried the trap that caught him. He ain’t twitchin’.
