IRELAND

Post by william williams » Wed Feb 08, 2012 6:10 pm

I was asked to write a poem with a celtic flavour so please let me know what you think

Ireland. ©

She may have been me birth place,
But Australia’s now me home.
For when I was a young lass,
I was sent across the briny foam.

Far away from old Kilkenny,
That place, I once did roam.
To a place that is so different,
From my old, old Irish home.

Where the grass was so much greener,
And there’s always water in the creek.
And evening fog, will settle in the glen.
But soft rain, it makes the place so bleak

But this country I’m now blessed with.
Has many different things to see.
In the vastness, of this mighty country,
Where sweeping plain will be

And her lofty covered mountain ranges,
That climbs up from fields of golden grain.
And streams that tumble from those mountain,
Will quietly wander, slowly once again.

Where her beaches golden sands prevail
And the sunlight on her sparkling waters
Make a wishful dream come true
Australia, this land, where I’m her daughter

Good go Bill.

There was a bloke I heard of, who used to walk around the room and say his verse out loud to see if the rhythm of accents fitted with his steps banging on the floor.
Most of your lines have a good beat, some have an extra beat which trips up the flow of the rhythm a bit, but only slightly. It's pretty close.

I thought celtic flavour was what you found in a bottle of scotch.

I guess the contrast between the Irish countryside and the Australian bush is very stark.

Although I went past a place on the Great Ocean Road called Koroit down towards Warrnambool and the people there have sort of made the countryside in parts into a facsimile of celtic rural scenes. I think. They might relate to a verse like this Bill :)

Thanks Bob and thanks Neville

If I remember rightly Neville. There are many miles of stone fences surrounding the area I don't think it was because of the Celtic influence but they had to clear the land of stone so what better way than use them to make fences as it is dam good dairy country and labour was very cheap in those days. Thats what I was told.
