Peppytweak the Oodlebug

Post by Wendy Seddon » Mon Oct 22, 2012 7:55 am

Peppytweak the Oodlebug

Have you ever lost a thing beneath a lounge or chair,
and when you bent to pick it up you found it wasn’t there?
Have you put a ‘something’ down and went to get a bite
and then returned to find it moved which gave you quite a fright?

Oodlebugs are in your house, they magic things away.
They love to baffle human kids it’s their idea of play.
Peppytweak is such an imp who loves to gather string,
he’ll take a piece from anywhere, off nearly anything!

Oodlebug, oh Oodlebug,
Hiding there beneath my rug,
find another place to go –
I don’t want you here, you know!

Pictures fall down off the walls and parcels fall to bits,
Guitars are losing all their strings – that really is the pits!
Kites no longer have a tail, and yo-yo’s can’t go down,
the washing’s falling off the line from all around the town.

Can you stop this Oodlebug from causing such distress?
By leaving things without their strings and in a mighty mess?
There’s a way, so listen now – the secret, it is mine,
and when you’re done he’ll never ever try to steal your twine.

Oodlebug, oh Oodlebug,
Hiding there beneath my rug,
find another place to go –
I don’t want you here, you know.

Tie your strings in Granny knots and soak them all in tea,
then let them dry for twenty days or maybe twenty three.
Hang them then beneath a tree, a Wattle tree’s OK,
and Peppytweak will not come back today or any day.

Guitars can all be strummed again as kites with tails soar,
the washing flaps upon the line just like it did before.
Oodlebugs are many though and so I’m warning you,
to keep an eye for the one who gobbles all the glue!

Oodlebug, oh Oodlebug,
Hiding there beneath my rug,
find another place to go –
I don’t want you here, you know!

Thanks Mal,

both for the comments and the tip = all sorted.
I'm really enjoying writing for kids at the moment.

Well Done Wendy,

Someone was asking for a contact for you recently. I'm sure they have been in touch by now.

I agree with the judges and other comments. This is a charming poem and would make a great base for an illustrated children's book. congratulations and keep them coming. I guess we are all just kids at heart and love to find an innocent spot to have a giggle.. It gave me a broad smile and almost laughed out loud.
