Turning It All Around
© Stephen Whiteside 08.12.2012
Last Christmas I was just a mess, I know -
No tree, no holly, bells nor mistletoe;
No wreath to welcome strangers at the door;
Not a single festive piece on show;
A hollow, empty aching at my core,
And wondering just what it all was for.
I owed it to the kids to find my feet.
Self pity is, of course, a one way street.
I found that ancient paradox of life.
By helping others, I became complete.
I gave up thoughts of marriage, and a wife,
And paddled into waters free of strife.
I’ve found I do not need “another half”.
(“He stood alone” might be my epitaph.)
So now, quite self-contained, I face the world,
With chuckle never far away, nor laugh.
Though all those slings and arrows might be hurled,
My easy self-defence has been unfurled,
And now, when all the kids come round this year,
They’ll find my little house is full of cheer.
They will not slink away for guilt or shame.
My precious soul’s no longer ruled by fear.
I’ve learnt to master life’s confounding game,
And only pray that others do the same.

Someone once said that writing poetry is like appearing naked in public. I think your piece here shows what he may have meant.

Great sentiments Stephen, I find that family members stress out over presents and such when all you really want is a visit a cuddle from the grandkids and a good time for all.
