Re: R.I.P.
Ho Hum, I hear what you are saying Heather, the fact of the matter is he killed people, today he would probably walk free because of some slimy lawyer, however, blokes like Ned Kelly knew how the system worked back then, just as the criminals do now, and from the moment he fired the first shot at someone he would have known he would hang if he was ever caught! The main thing his sympathisers hate, is the fact he did get caught. As Neville has pointed out, the whole legal system issue is too big to get into here....I didn't coin the phrase "The law is an Ass" but the more I see of it , the more I agree!

Why ho hum?
Ross, the evidence against Kelly was probably overwhelming then, as it is now and, if they had had the science and policing methods in 1880 that we have today, his goose would have been well and truly cooked - charcoaled even. If you read the link I sent you will see that Kelly did not know the system - have a read, it is interesting.
Interesting thought Ross: what if Ned Kelly had not been caught? I wonder what would have happened. He could easily have done a Mockbel. There's a poem in that I reckon. There you go, Maureen, homework!

The truth is that Kelly probably could have escaped - and he already had, in fact - but he chose to return to the siege to try to rescue his brother, and his brother's friend. It is this single act, more than any other, that led to the spawning of the phrase 'as game as Ned Kelly'.

... let's not forget that there were some pretty bad coppers in those days. Lonregan(sp) was certainly no angel either.

Re: R.I.P.
Ned was shot point blank in the head by a policeman one day, several years before it all began. He should have been killed there and then. Amazingly, the gun mis-fired.

The point is not who is good or bad, but how the media constructs celebrities out of people who have made no more useful contribution to the advancement of Australia than get their names on the front page of the paper.

Re: R.I.P.
That's a rather cynical view isn't it, Neville?

Unfortunately Stephen, it is not just an imagination of the cynical mind but demonstrably, true. Commentators more qualified than me have identified , famous for being famous , as the main principle of contemporary celebrity status ( there are exceptions).

Quite right Bob. That's part of it.
