Broome's still small, but not as small as Bidyadanga.

Good poem - pretty well summed up Cooktown. ;)

Heather I notice that in your poem there are no people. There is one living creature, the dozing cat. ;) :) Should a small town be empty of people ? :)

The people are there Nev ? thats where the images that the poem envokes comes into play.

I saw lots of people just had to close my eyes.

I actually thought of putting specific people in the poem, Neville but I decided that it might have become a bit tedious if I made it too long. On the other hand, every one of those venues would have people in the scene as Bob says - the shops, the pool, the park, the church (well, maybe not the church!). This is what was once described to me as a "list poem" and I think they can get boring if they are too long.

Broome's population, for anyone who is interested, was, apparently about 16,000 (this may be the whole shire) in the last census but rises to about 45,000 in the tourist season. Compared to my little town of about 4000, Broome fails the test as a small town. So, Matt can still do his homework! :)

Yep, Marty, I can see Cooktown too. :)

Oh, and Neville, the cat's name is Wally... ;) :)

Great poem, Heather. Reminds me of Jim Haynes' classic "Lunch for Dipso Dan".

Thanks Stephen. Don't know that poem by Jim Haynes and had look on the net but of course he has it tightly controlled - you have to buy the book or cd, and fair enough.

Stephen, I looked up that poem and I had read or heard it before some place. Clever.

Neville, I listened to the music. Nice bit of oboe.

Oh Neville you have no idea. The three stooges got nothin' on the bar flies I have to contend with. I think I'd prefer the three stooges. Got to figure out which one is Larry, Curly and Mo now.... Now that might keep me amused at work tonight.... :)
