.
It all began in England back in 1865
when Catherine and William Booth saw how the poor survive –
denied their chance for glory,
every one a different story –
common threads that still provide the drive.

A drive that builds communities that benefit us all.
So show your generosity this year when Salvos call.
It can’t be out of fashion,
exercising our compassion –
give a hand to those who’ve had a fall.

When life deals out misfortune then the Salvos will be there
with rehabilitation, food and shelter, and a prayer.
With bushfire fighters scrambling,
punters caught by problem gambling,
Salvos are the ones who always care.

For the homeless alcoholic that the public all revile,
a Salvo seems the only one who’ll sit and talk a while.
And through the festive season
often Salvos are the reason
troubled households finally can smile.

When breakdowns in relationships make progress all up hill
or when dependency on drugs becomes a bitter pill,
results of such behaviour
cause the need to find a saviour –
if the Salvos don’t show up … who will?

Through blood and fire, in tempests or wherever victims plead,
you’ll find committed Salvos meeting people at their need.
Although they have no steeple,
the intrinsic worth of people
focuses the Salvos on their creed.

A million Aussies every year, the Salvos help pull through
disasters or emergencies and social problems too.
Please give your time and money,
’cause you know, it isn’t funny –
one day, God forbid, it might be you.

Salvation Army officers need help to do the task.
We hardly even see them through that super-hero mask.
So help them help the nation –
give some time, a cash donation.
Now’s the time. It’s not too much to ask.
