No More Pain

© Rod Walford April 2014

Her footsteps grew much slower as the sun was setting lower
On the steep and rocky footpath ' neath the lonely ocean sky
At the age of thirty seven she had lost all hope of heaven
Somewhere back there in the hospital where he had gone to die.

He had been so warm and caring, always thoughtful, kind and sharing
And he'd asked no probing questions on her love life gone before
Though he knew she'd been a sinner, in his eyes she was a winner
And the deep warmth of their radiance could enchant her to the core.

In her heart his love grew fonder as she let her memory wander
Down the long and painful pathway that she'd walked not long ago
Back when every evening falling saw the gentlemen come calling
And she'd count their seedy dollars in her bedside candle's glow.

Well it wasn't how she planned it but somehow she learned to stand it
And a hundred other girls all shared the thoughts within her head
But she hated every feeling as she stared up at the ceiling
And the cold light of each morning filled her lonely heart with dread.

Then she'd met him at the bus stop and you might have heard a pin drop
In the quiet corners of her heart where no man ever walked
It was like a first time ever on those evenings when he never
Took his arm from round her shoulder as he hugged her while they talked.

In the dark her soul was burning with forgotten scenes returning
From when pretty dreams of childhood fade to nothing in the night
And she swore she smelled the flowers as the minutes turned to hours
And the sweet thoughts filled her memory as his strong arms held her tight.

Then she felt her body shiver as a cottage by a river
Formed a vision of contentment on the mirage of her mind
An evening mist was falling and his husky voice was calling
Then she ran into his outstretched arms and left her world behind.

......................................................

The track at last was ending and the evening sky was blending
Every colour of the spectrum in a pastel symphony
She could hear the breakers roaring and a lonely seagull soaring
As she edged towards the clifftop, staring coldly out to sea.

Then the demons came to taunt her but she didn't let them daunt her
As she stared at the horizon with her vision growing dim
Then a breeze from nowhere kissed her saying just how much he missed her
As her fading world cascaded in the love she had for him.

Then the evening mist was falling and his husky voice was calling
As she stepped into the garden of the cottage once again
And the seagull's cry diminished as he whispered “It is finished"
Then his arms were all embracing - and her heart felt no more pain.

That is truly beautifully crafted Rod - and a sadly sweet story to go with it it. Nicely done and very much enjoyed.

Thank you Maureen & Wazza
It was partly inspired by an old Marianne Faithfull song called "The ballad of Lucy Jordan"
