PUGNACIOUS

Sometimes when our grown up kids visit they bring their own dogs with them - that leads to problems with the resident dog

PUGNACIOUS
Maureen Clifford © The Scribbly Bark Poet

There was that smile, and wolf’s teeth bared
that warning growl – ‘come near’ he dared
‘and if you’re lucky you’ll be spared’
but that he whispered soft.

He wasn’t fooled by that sharp suit
or the cheap shoes – he fancied boots
he knew you’d come to take his loot
but no way he would share.

The dried seed heads were scattered, big
the hole and clods of earth he’d dig
with paws just like a drilling rig –
to hide his bone away.

So next time you’re on a home visit
remember – it’s not yours now – is it?
Don’t cause my pug a hissy fit
just leave your dog at home.

Loved the title Maureen! Pugs are surprisingly soft-natured I think - they use their little snuffling noises to win you over!

We have a Maltese Shih Tzu cross. My daughter and family who are living with us while building have a Pug / Jack Russell cross. When the two originally got together it was dog war extreme. Some weeks later they were smelling each other's you know what. Great mates now the dirty little hounds.
Enjoyed your poem Maureen.
