Homework w/e 14.7.14 'A Bleak Winter's Day'

Post by jakkimay » Tue Jul 08, 2014 11:35 am

‘A Bleak Winter’s Day’

An icy wind blows in from the south.
Skin exposed cops each frozen burst
as sleeting rain cuts through winter’s chill
feeling as though the world has been cursed.

The day is bleak – a polluted grey -
blackened clouds are disguising the sky.
Snow must be close by; there is no doubt
for no blue can be seen way up high.

The ground is so hard; it feels like stone
that no shovel or pick can break through.
Trees are laid bare – their foliage gone,
which doesn’t make for a pleasant view.

The rivers are set like crystal rock,
frosty grass crunches under your foot.
Mishaps occur all over the place -
many ankles and bums soon kaput.

I’d much rather stay inside and warm
watching the wintry, frozen ballet,
with it’s icy wind and chilling rain,
than go out on a bleak winter’s day.

Good on ya Jakki, well done.

Just to be a torment I point out that "caput " means head. The German word "kaput" means wrecked. Unless of course you intended to say that some people had their brains in unusual places.

I only knew the Kaput one so it's as well you got in first Neville or I would have displayed my ingorance by declaring it a typo or spelling error

Good on you Jakki - lovely to see you having a shot and meeting the challenge. With all these 'cold poems' I think we need Bob to share around the rum bottle :D

Thanks Neville & Maureen. I realised the error after I posted. Maybe I'll get it right next time.

Hi Jakki
Liked your poem. Don't worry too much about caput or kaput as I know a few people who their head could be their posterior or their posterior could be their head. Nice work! I'm for the rum Maureen - just back from Bundy muster and we went to the distillery!
Cheers

Dot

I make lots of mistakes Jakki, but I discovered that you can edit the items after you have posted them and correct things. Sometimes I have to edit several times. ;) :)
