Sippets anyone?

Post by alongtimegone » Fri Dec 05, 2014 8:36 pm

True story. Cringe cringe.

Just Water Please.

“Sippets dear”? she asked me, as she turned towards the stove.
My brain slipped into gear. I thought “Now, sippets, what are those”?
I’d never heard the word before, and so I paused to think.
“Sippets? Something that you sip? I guess she means a drink.”

“I would.” I said “and thank you. That would be first rate.
But don’t take too much trouble. Just water will be great.”
It was all so many years ago, but I shudder when I think
of the day I thought that sippet was a fancy word for drink.

That got the brain going - I had to look it up Wazza - in UK - Lancashire - where my dad came from they call(ed) them Pobs. When any of us kids were feeling poorly we got served up milk and pobs which was supposed to be good for invalids - to this day I shudder at the thought.

My first overnight at a friend's house Neville. They laughed which made it worse.

Milk and pobs ... I can understand the shudder Maureen. Sippets sounds a little friendlier than pobs.

Clearly Heather. :D Today they are croutons. But I'm sure you knew that.

I'd never heard of sippets. I can see how different regions/states develop their own language.... :)

Sounds disgusting, but then mum used to give us hot vegemite drinks with bread in it so same thing I reckon,

Still drink them now when I feel a clod coming on.
