Homework 23/2 - LIE DOWN WITH DOGS

Post by Maureen K Clifford » Sun Feb 15, 2015 12:00 pm

LIE DOWN WITH DOGS
Maureen Clifford © The Scribbly Bark Poet

Nothing ventured nothing gained – were words her Mother used to say.
She was always quoting proverbs, trotted one out every day.
Words to live by she did call them some quoted from the good book
Heaps of bulldust daughter thought then, never stopped to take a look
at the meanings hid behind them. Wiser now she finds herself
often quoting quirky sayings, often suffers foot in mouth.
But least said is soonest mended and a watched pot never boils,
at last out of debt and danger after years of work and toil.

New brooms always sweep the cleanest and that’s just because they’re new.
Years all gone are now recalled. So close her final years are too.
Brevity’s the soul of wit and less is more or so they say,
when her time comes she’ll leave nature to dispose in nature’s way.
Scatter me into the ocean – Maybe not I cannot swim.
Cast me to the wind that’s blowing – No don’t – flying ain’t my thing.
Put my ashes ‘neath a leafy bower to fertilize the ground.
That’ll do – close by a tree, I’m happy when there’s dogs around.

Very good, Maureen

That is an amazing list of quotable quotes. I am sure my mother used many of these, and some others I am sure she just made up. :D

Thanks Allan and Dot - sadly my Mum now says when I trot these sayings out - 'Well I never heard that before' Of course she has but she no longer remembers.

I saw a cartoon Dot with a whole heap of dogs lined up to take a wee on the only tree in the paddock - it tickled my fancy no end
