DUST TO DUST

DUST TO DUST … Maureen Clifford © The Scribbly Bark Poet

Together they twined – a celestial dance
an ephemeral moment in time
The mist of the morning wrapped grey gauze around
the two lovers who met and entwined.
Clear rain drops hung silent – diamonds on the wire
the remnant of late summer storms
small faceted prisms - rainbows sparkling bright
that took on another life form.
Together the lovers blinded by the light
joined ‘neath cerulean blue skies
as the blue sky cathedral shared blessings to earth
there were none there who heeded their cries.
They chased and they played crossing over each other
a ballet of sorts on the ground
until, both exhausted, they dropped and were still -
of the willy-willy nothing found.

Footnote: In Aboriginal myths, willy-willies represent spirit forms. They are often quite scary spirits, and parents may warn their children that if they misbehave, a spirit will emerge from the spinning vortex of dirt and chastise them. There is a story of the origin of the brolga in which a bad spirit descends from the sky and captures the young being and abducts her by taking the form of a willy-willy.
