One long look in the mirror
And I liked not what I saw
A foot soldier just marking time
face ravaged by war
that time had waged upon his face
leaving not a scar
but tracks of leathered wrinkles trace
a pair of eyes that are
searching for the lad within
That young and impish rogue
Who silver tongued a path through life
with cheeky Aussie brogue
With optimistic swagger now
This letter to the man
Said I'm overdue for clocking off
Heading Coonabarabran
Time to hit the dusty trail
Get back to my roots
To feel some real red outback soil
On city slicker boots
So wish me luck, I've packed the truck
New chapter to begin
My optimism gives a wink
My eyes at last they grin.

Nicely done Allan - you can almost see the guy and feel him 'searching for the lad within'. I like the line, 'who silver tongued a path through life' too.

Another good one Allan - well done, the picture is very clear.

Thanks Catherine and Maureen
Somewhat autobiographical. Can't wait to leave the city behind.

Nice poem Allan. I also like the ...silver-tongued...
It is rare when one can have a bit of both worlds as I think we have here on Magnetic Island - close to the city but still small town.
Catch ya!

I enjoyed this poem, Allan - and like the others, especially the "silver tongued" line! That's a great word picture!
All the best with your plans to get some red outback soil on those city slicker boots
Cheers, Shelley
